The history of Airds, NSW, is rich and multi-faceted, reflecting its evolution from a region of significant Aboriginal presence to a modern suburb. Originally named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810 after the Scottish estate of his wife Elizabeth's family, Airds was a term that encompassed a large area between Glenfield and Gilead. Over time, as settlements like Campbelltown developed, the name Airds fell into disuse. It was only in the 1970s, with the plans of the Housing Commission for a large new estate, that Airds reemerged as a place name.
The region's early years in the 1800s were marked by the presence of Aboriginal people, specifically the Dharawal (or Tharawal) people, who left a legacy of rock and cave paintings. These artworks, unfortunately, have suffered from vandalism in recent years, and their locations are now known to only a few. The area's geography, defined by the Georges and Nepean river systems and their tributaries, presented both challenges and opportunities to early settlers. The landscape went through significant changes, with the clearing of Cumberland plain woodlands for farming and grazing, leading to erosion and other environmental impacts. However, land management efforts in the past century have restored much of the area's cover, though not all with native species.
In its modern form, Airds is a predominantly residential suburb, with most houses owned by Housing NSW. Developed based on American Radburn principles for urban planning, which aimed to separate traffic from pedestrians, the suburb faced challenges related to this design, including issues with crime and passive surveillance. This has led to significant urban renewal efforts in recent years, with plans to transform the suburb into a more socially integrated community, reducing the concentration of public housing and addressing various social issues.
