Berrima, nestled in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, is a historic village with a rich colonial past. Established in 1831, it was selected by Major Thomas Mitchell for its strategic location on a new route linking Sydney to Port Phillip (now Melbourne). The village was designed to serve as the administrative center for the County of Camden and quickly became a hub for local settlers and travelers.
The town's layout, planned by surveyor Robert Hoddle, reflects the style of a traditional English village, complete with a village green, public buildings, and residential streets. Berrima's architecture is predominantly Georgian, a style that has been largely preserved, making it a unique example of early Australian colonial design.
Berrima's importance as a government center waned as settlers moved towards the vast hinterlands of New South Wales, and other areas in the Highlands developed more rapidly. Despite this, Berrima remained a quaint village, its small population partly due to the presence of Berrima Gaol.
The town's buildings, many of which were constructed by convict labor, include the Berrima Gaol and the Courthouse. These structures stand as a testament to Berrima's historical significance. The courthouse, built between 1836 and 1838, hosted the colony of New South Wales' first trial by jury. The gaol, on the other hand, was constructed over five years, with its later years serving as a training center for female convicts.
Berrima was bypassed by the Hume Highway in 1989, which contributed to its preservation as a historic village. Today, Berrima thrives on tourism, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and well-preserved Georgian architecture. The village's charm is enhanced by various heritage-listed sites, including the Berrima Correctional Centre, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, and several historic inns and cottages.
