Bringelly, a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The area, originally known as the Parish of Bringelly, was named after the local hill and later became a parish of the County of Cumberland. The Parish of Bringelly included neighboring suburbs such as Greendale, Wallacia, and Badgerys Creek.
The first significant British settler in Bringelly was Robert Lowe, who was granted 1,000 acres in the parish in 1812. By 1818, most of the land in the area had been granted and was being cleared for farms. Among the early settlers was D'Arcy Wentworth, the principal surgeon of New South Wales. Wentworth's property in Bringelly is linked to the legend of the bushranger Jack Donahue, also known as "The Wild Colonial Boy," who was killed on Wentworth's property.
Another notable property in Bringelly is Kelvin, also referred to as The Retreat. Built in 1820 by Thomas Laycock Jnr., Kelvin is a Georgian farmhouse listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. The property was later owned by various notable figures, including Alfred Kennerley, who became the Premier of Tasmania.
The township was officially named in 1863, with the Bringelly Post Office opening in 1857. The suburb was part of the Nepean Shire, which was formed in 1906 and later divided amongst Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown, and Camden councils in 1948. Currently, Bringelly is part of both the Liverpool and Camden local government areas.
Today, Bringelly is adjacent to Badgerys Creek, the site of the future Western Sydney Airport. The NSW Government has plans to build a new commercial center in the north of Bringelly, which will be named Bradfield in honor of Sydney Harbour Bridge engineer Dr. John Bradfield.
