Catherine Field, located in the Macarthur Region of New South Wales, Australia, has a history that reflects both its indigenous roots and colonial development. The area was originally home to the Muringong, who were the southernmost of the Darug people. European settlement began in the early 19th century when John Macarthur established his property at Camden in 1805, predominantly for raising merino sheep.
The name "Catherine Field" is attributed to George Molle, the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony and second in charge to Governor Macquarie. In 1817, Molle was granted 500 acres in the area and named it after his wife, Catherine Molle.
One of the significant estates in the area is Catherine Park House, built on land originally awarded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie to William Douglas Campbell in 1815. This estate has passed through the hands of several prominent Australian figures, including Hubert Harry Robbins, who made significant alterations to the house between 1937 and 1945. The property's history is intertwined with the development of the surrounding region, with connections to pastoral and farming activities.
The suburb also contains a pre-school, a cricket oval, and a community hall. A theme park, El Caballo Blanco, was a notable feature in Catherine Field during the 1980s. The suburb is part of the local government area of Camden Council and was recorded to have a population of 1,657 according to the 2016 census.
