Grasmere, a semi-rural residential suburb in the Macarthur Region of Sydney, NSW, Australia, is part of the Camden local government area. Its history is deeply interwoven with the indigenous and colonial past of the region.
Originally, Grasmere was home to the Gandangara people of the Southern Highlands and the Muringong, the southernmost of the Darug people. The European settlement history of Grasmere began in 1805 when John Macarthur, known for pioneering the wool industry in Australia, was granted 5,000 acres at Cowpastures, now known as Camden.
The area was first named West Camden in 1823 after the Government Prohibition Order against entry to lands west of the Nepean River ceased. Governor Brisbane then granted John Macarthur an additional 5,000 acres adjoining his Camden Park Estate.
In 1885, parts of the Camden Park Estate were subdivided into small farms. One of the buyers, William Henry Paling, purchased several properties, including a 450-acre estate he named Grasmere. Paling, a musician turned businessman, donated this land in 1888 for the foundation of the Carrington Hospital, named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Charles, Baron Carrington. This hospital and related buildings, including Grasmere Cottage, are listed on the State Heritage Register.
Grasmere has seen significant development in recent years. Originally a farming area, it is now evolving into an exclusive rural residential estate. While the population has grown, careful management by Camden Council aims to maintain Grasmere's rural character.
