Picton, situated in New South Wales, Australia, is a historic town with roots that extend back to the early days of European settlement. Once known as Stonequarry, Picton is located on the main southern road and railway line, approximately 53 miles southwest of Sydney. The town was originally part of the lands inhabited by the Tharawal people.
Picton's European history is closely linked to the development of transportation and infrastructure in the region. A significant shift occurred with the construction of a new line of the Great South Road over the Razorback Range from Camden, especially after the railway's arrival in 1863. This made Picton unique as it's the only town in the Southern Hemisphere that one can pass through twice when travelling by train on this route.
The town boasts several historical structures and sites, including a school with an average attendance of 150, a post office, and various halls. Picton is also noted for its picturesque natural sights, such as the Picton Lakes located six miles to the west and the railway viaduct that is 276ft long and 76ft high.
