The history of Rossmore, a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, is deeply rooted in its early days as an agricultural district and its connections to early European settlement in Australia.
Originally known as Cabramatta after the parish of Cabramatta, the area of Rossmore was prominently featured in "The Cabramatta Store," a novel by Mary Theresa Vidal, which holds the distinction of being the first novel published by a woman in Australia. The suburb underwent a name change to avoid confusion with the new station of Cabramatta established in 1856 when the railway line was extended from Granville to Liverpool.
Rossmore's agricultural history is significant. It was one of the oldest agricultural districts in New South Wales, with early land ownership mainly by Robert Bell, who had been granted 130 hectares and had purchased additional small lots. The land, initially intended to be the village of Cabramatta, later became known as Rossmore to distinguish it from the area around the new Cabramatta railway station.
The Rossmore area was also known for horse studs before 1810, with many Irish settlers in the region. One of these studs, believed to be named Rossmoor, possibly drew its name from Rossmore Lodge, a renowned horse stud in Ireland.
Rossmore is also notable for its historic buildings, such as the Holy Innocents Church, which was consecrated in 1850. This church is a significant heritage site, with its foundation stone laid on Holy Innocents Day in 1848. Moreover, the suburb houses several Buddhist temples, reflecting the diverse religious and cultural fabric of the area.
Today, Rossmore's demographic profile, as per the 2016 census, shows a diverse population with a majority born in Australia, and a significant representation of people from Italy, Lebanon, China, Malta, and England. The suburb remains connected to Liverpool and the greater Sydney area through key roads and public transport routes, including the South West Rail Link's stabling facility opened in 2015.
