The history of Smeaton Grange in New South Wales is deeply interwoven with the early days of European settlement in Australia and its transformation over the centuries. Originally, the area belonged to the Tharawal and Gundungurra people. The European history of Smeaton Grange began with land grants in the early 19th century. One notable grant was made to explorers William Hovell and Charles Throsby in 1816, known initially as Narralling Grange. James Fitzpatrick, an associate of Hovell and Throsby, later acquired the land.

The land grant, which eventually became known as Smeaton Grange, played a significant role in the area's development. Initially, the land was used for agricultural purposes, including wheat farming and sheep farming. Over time, the focus shifted to dairy farming, a practice that continued well into the twentieth century.

The Smeaton Grange property has a rich heritage, marked by various uses over the years. During World War II, the Smeaton Grange house was used as a residence for army officers. In the 1950s, it was leased to a well-known local family. In the early 1960s, the Catholic Church acquired the property, using it as a religious house, retreat center, and novitiate. This connection to the Catholic Church continued when the property became part of Magdalene High School in 2000.

The late 20th century saw significant changes in Smeaton Grange, with the area transitioning from rural to industrial. In the early 1990s, Camden Council rezoned the land north of the Smeaton Grange house for industrial use, aiming to attract businesses to the area. This move was successful, and today Smeaton Grange is known for its industrial estate, which includes various businesses, both large and small, like the Coles distribution centre, one of the largest floor area buildings in New South Wales.
