Tahmoor, a town in the Wollondilly Shire of New South Wales, has a rich history that has seen it transform from a rural area into a modern town. Originally named Myrtle Creek, it was known for its challenging terrain, which included a series of pits and bogs along the Great Southern Road, making travel and transport difficult in the early years. This led to the construction of a road bridge in 1898 and a diversion of the Main South Line railway in 1919 to facilitate easier transportation of goods, particularly from local orchardists and dairy farmers.
The town has undergone several name changes over the years, including Bargo, Bargo West, Cordeaux, and Bronzewing Park, before finally being named Tahmoor, a local Aboriginal word meaning “Bronzewinged Pigeon”. Despite its modern development, Tahmoor retains significant historical elements. It is home to the oldest house in the Shire, the Travellers Inn, and other sites of historical and general interest. The town is also near Wirrimbirra Sanctuary and features various community facilities, including a sportsground, BMX track, and the Kiah Ridge Conference Centre.
As of the 2016 census, Tahmoor had a population of over 5,000, with a mix of indigenous and Australian-born residents. The town has developed a robust commercial area with supermarkets, small businesses, and medical and dental centers. Education is catered for with schools such as Tahmoor Public School and Wollondilly Anglican College. The Tahmoor Colliery and a poultry processing plant operated by Ingham's Enterprises are significant employers in the area.
